Zebra Crossings is a dedicated space for individuals with Ehlers-Danlos Syndromes + Neurodivergence, sometimes combined with complex health issues and those who know us. Ishtar strives to provide education, resources, and hope for those navigating unique challenges. What ARE Ehlers-Danlos SyndromeS?

Ehlers-Danlos Syndromes (EDS) are a group of connective tissue disorders affecting internal organs, skin, joints, and blood vessels, the effects and degree depending on which subtype(s), and  leading to various degrees of hypermobility and other related issues.

How does Neurodivergence relate to EDS?

Neurodivergence encompasses various cognitive variations, which may coexist with EDS, impacting sensory processing and behavioural responses in unique ways. Neurodivergence may include: Autism, ADHD, 2SLGBTQIA+, and/or very high IQ w/ polymath 'systems thinking':  having a highly flexible body with a highly flexible mind working to control the steering wheel and often failing due to overwhelm.

What complex conditions are involved?

EDS can come with any number of complex conditions including by not exclusively: Dysautonomia, POTS, Vertigo, Additive Autonomic Neuropathy, pelvic floor complications such as Interstitial Cystitis, MALS and Pelvic Congestion Syndrome, as well as SIBO, MCAS, Allergies and more. hEDS type individuals are also more likely to be neurodivergent. hEDS individuals may have multiple spinal problems also, such as scoliosis and stenosis. What are the symbols?

A zebra is an individual with Ehlers-Danlos Syndrome. “Sometimes when you hear hoofbeats, it really is a zebra.”

A teal zebra is a Neurodivergent individual with Ehler's-Danlos Syndromes.

Schrödinger's Zebra: Ehlers-Danlos, with other conditions that mask the EDS, making it even more difficult to see, and thusly more difficult to diagnose (re: Schrödinger's cat). That doesn't mean that it isn't there.

Zebra Crossings: The Support, Access & Info that we need to cross otherwise isolating and potentially dangerous roads. It also symbolizes EDS crossing with other conditions.
